Keys to Consistency
Pre-Swing Fundamentals
- Grip: Hold the club more in the fingers. To check the clubface, hold the club directly in front of you so that the scoring lines are vertical to the sky. Novice golfers often turn the toe in, toward the target.
- Posture: Feel athletic with your weight on the balls of your feet, your back straight, and your knees slightly bent.
- Ball Position: Place your feet together with the ball in the center. Step toward the target with the target foot then place your trail foot back, a bit farther for woods than for irons.
- Aim: Use an intermediate target about 12 inches in front of your ball. Align your hips and shoulders are parallel to the intended line of flight. Aim beyond your target.
- Attitude/Mindset: In golf, what you see is what you get. Avoid thinking negatively by looking at the trouble. Look at the intended landing area with soft eyes.
- Anxiety Level: Control your anxiety level by controlling your breathing. Breathe deeply and slowly as you go through your pre-shot routine. Breathe in and then exhale slowly before starting your swing.
- Enjoy Practice: Most players do not enjoy practicing. Many times this is because they do not know what makes up a good practice session. Plan your time at the range and stick with your plan.
- Practice like you play! Plan each shot. Go through your pre-shot routine, avoiding the scrape-and-hit syndrome. Incorporate your current drill as your practice swing. Change clubs between each ball.
